Image Formatting – A whopping seven in ten Americans use social media these days. Whether you have a personal social
media account or a business profile, it’s important to understand how to make images look good. High-
quality images mean more followers, after all.
Not sure where to start to make your social media feed look professional and defined? It begins with
image formatting. Here’s what you need to know.
Image Formatting for Different Social Networks
Each network is slightly different, and the image will appear differently depending on where you place it,
such as on a newsfeed or in your profile photo. It also matters how the user will view your social profile,
such as on a desktop or mobile device.
Here are the optimal image sizes for the best viewing experience.
A cover photo on Facebook should be 820 x 312 pixels for a desktop computer. For mobile devices, it
should be 640 x 360 pixels.
The cover photo is much larger than the profile photo, giving you creative freedom. It's a great place for a brand logo or a picture of your business or products.
The profile picture should be at least 180 x 180 pixels and 140 x 140 pixels for mobile.
The recommended size for shared images and banners is 1,200 x 630 pixels. For an event image or
cover photo, it’s recommended you use a picture at 470 × 174 pixels.
Your Twitter cover photo or header image should be different from your profile image.
Cover photos should be 1500 x 500 pixels and less than 5 MB. Your profile picture should be 400 x 400
pixels and smaller than 2 MB.
The best size for shared images is 900 x 450 pixels. For in-stream photos, 440 x 220 pixels.
Depending on how many images you’re sharing, you should adjust the sizes accordingly.
Single photo – 1200 x 675
Two photos – 700 x 800
Three photos – 700 x 800 (left) 1200 x 686 (two right)
Four photos – 1200 x 600 each
The general recommended aspect ratio is 16:9.
Since Instagram is a platform that's all about visuals, getting the right image formatting down is key. The right photo size converter can help you resize images and make the process easier.
Your profile photo should be 110 x 110 pixels. The recommended photo size for Instagram is 1080 x 1080 pixels. Thumbnails should be 161 x 161 pixels.
You’ll want to upload a photo that’s at least 1080 pixels wide. Instagram scales photos down to 612 x 612, and they’ll show up in the feed as 510 x 510.
For rectangular or square photos, maintain an aspect ratio of 1:1 or 1.91:1.
The recommended resolution for Instagram stories is 1080 x 1920, with a minimum resolution of 600 x
On YouTube, your profile picture should be 800 x 800 pixels.
The channel art on your cover photo should give people an idea of what your page is all about. The
recommended size is 2560 x 1440 pixels. Cropping can really affect the look of your picture, cutting out
text or a logo, depending on the device. Aim for 1546 x 423 pixels if you want to play it safe.
Videos need to have a 16:9 aspect ratio. The different video resolutions include:
2K – 2560 x 1440 pixels
4K – 3840 x 2160 pixels
144p – 256 x 144 pixels
240p – 426 x 240 pixels
360p – 640 x 360 pixels
480p – 854 x 480 pixels
720p – 1280 x 720 pixels
1080p – 1920 x 1080 pixels
Your profile image should be 300 x 300 pixels with a maximum size of 10MB. This is the picture that
represents you, so it’s important that clients see a profile image that looks professional and high-quality.
The recommended image size for LinkedIn’s background image is 1584 x 396 pixels. It can’t be larger than 4MB.
On a company page, the logo should be a minimum of 300 x 300 pixels and the cover image 1128 x 191
pixels. For your blog posts, the image should be 1350 x 440 pixels.
Shared images should be at 1200 x 627 pixels. On the life tab, the recommended size for the main image
is 1128 x 376 pixels and 900 x 600 for company photos?
