The terms health and well-being remain often used interchangeably. Although a person cannot have one and not the other, they are two different concepts that are very different and have different meanings.

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines health as “a complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not simply the absence of disease or illness.”

The WHO defines well-being as “the optimal state of health of individuals and groups” and well-being is expressed as “a positive attitude towards life.”

The main difference between health and well-being is that health is the goal, and well-being is the active process of achieving that goal. You really can’t achieve health without first achieving wellness. Well-being has a direct impact on overall health, which is essential for a strong, happy and fulfilling life.

Health Versus Well-Being

Even though you can’t choose your health, you can make conscious decisions about your well-being by living your life responsibly and taking proactive measures for your well-being.

Health includes the diagnosis of disease, predisposition to disease, and any unexpected injury.

Wellness is an active process of growth and change to achieve your maximum health and well-being. It includes actively participating in activities, making lifestyle choices and changes, controlling risk factors that can harm a person, focusing on nutrition, eating a balanced diet, and following spiritual practices that lead to holistic health.

Risk factors are actions or circumstances that increase a person’s risk of developing an illness or injury. Risk factors that can negatively impact health include:

Smoking: It is an important risk factor for lung cancer and cardiovascular disease.

Drinking alcohol: can cause liver damage, stroke, heart disease and cancer.

Unprotected sex: Spreads sexually transmitted diseases, including human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).

Physical activity/extreme sports can lead to broken bones and other injuries.

How many Dimensions of Well-Being are there?

Wellness is more than just physical health; It is holistic and multidimensional. It includes six dimensions that include physical, intellectual, emotional, environmental, social and spiritual well-being.

Physical: Physical well-being increases physical fitness; Through physical fitness, a person would be better able to prevent disease. Exercise stimulates a healthy mind and body. A sedentary lifestyle can be avoided by increasing physical activity in everyday life such as walking, cycling, walking the dog, walking and hiking. A good diet, a balanced diet, enough water (eight glasses a day) and enough sleep promote physical well-being.

Intellectual: Intellectual exercise and participation through learning, problem solving and creativity support intellectual well-being and promote better attitudes. People who learn new things and challenge their minds can avoid mental health problems.

Emotional: A person with emotional well-being may face stressful situations. A person who is aware of their own feelings, has good self-esteem and is sensitive to the feelings of others would feel emotionally comfortable.

Environment: Awareness of the role we play in improving our natural environment, rather than denigrating it, and maintaining and living in a healthy, safe physical environment promotes well-being.

Social: Social circles and support networks are invaluable to a person’s overall well-being. When you engage in, interact with, and contribute to a community, build good interpersonal relationships, and maintain long-term relationships with family and friends, you will be happier and healthier.

Spiritual: Spiritual well-being is not about a person’s religion or beliefs, but rather the search for the meaning and purpose of human existence. Developing compassion, caring, forgiveness and finding meaning in life contributes to spiritual well-being. This can be achieved through meditation, volunteer work, spending time in nature, etc.
